Critical Reflection

In my short film, my group represented the lgbt community by portraying a lesbian couple instead of the usual straight couple. The goal was to shine light and normalize same-sex couples in film. While neither of us are part of the lgbt community, we hoped to shine light on this issue and continue to normalize same-sex couples in film. Neither Aja nor I can fully understand the struggles of same-sex representation in the media or film, we can sympathize and try our best to make a change. My group did our research on the complexities of lgbt relationships in order to feel prepared to represent one ourselves. When we decided on what the dynamic would be, between the two of us, Aja and I decided that our characters would behave in a stereotypical man/woman role. Instead, we decided to leave that out entirely, finding the best results in us being ourselves, no typical “who wears the pants” dynamic. In addition to that, the cast in the short film was very diverse. While I am European, my co

production blog: flop or not?

welcome to the last and final production blog! today, i had my parents and sister watch our film in order to see if anything needed to be fixed. luckily, my parents have never been one to lie to me, so if there is an issue, they will tell me. firstly, my dad watched, and told me the only issue he could find was that in one scene, the music was too loud. that was an easy fix after i allerted jordyn about it. next, my mother. she was very suprised and thought it was very good, except that one of the scenes was extended for too long. that was a tricker fix, jordyn had to be carfull not to mess up any of the other transitions. my sister sister said we should find a way to make the sound of the police officer quieter. we needed to find a way to make the police sound muffled from far away, not underwater. it also needed to sound like it was coming from outside the door. jordyn decided that she would turn up the volume of the diegetic sound of the police officer and turn down the music. this

production blog: editing away

Hello! Today is our second to last day of editing and it was jam packed. the first step was for jordyn to edit in all of the titles. to do this we had to choose the perfect fonts, which aja and i helped pick out. after we talked, we decided to have the fonts fade in and out to simulate my charactor's memory loss. we chose to use a white font, which i thought would be an issue. once jordyn edited it in though, it looked great and she made sure it wouldnt get lost in any clip. After we got all of the titles edited in, we started to incorporate all of the new clips gotten from yesterday’s filming session. Jordyn cut them to the correct length, and put them in order into the editing software. now it was time for me to add in the scores, but jordyn struggled with this. it was hard to get the sound to come in smoothly and leave just as so. some even needed to be redone and lengthened to fit the scenes. then we watched the scenes with the added music, but decided some of the music was too

Production: a sprinkle of drama

greetings! today, my group and i needed to film our last 3 scenes. It was quick, and we got finished with all of the scenes. the first scene was the date scene that involved aja and i. The group wanted the atmosphere to be like a date, and went outside to my patio that has a small table and chairs. at first, it was too rainy and cloudy to film, but finally we got to see the sun. Once we had this chance we didnt wsnt to waste it so we immediatly went to film. the scene included a cross cut taking turns in between me and aja. At first, we were going to go back and forth between the 2 of us, but then aja had a great idea! her idea was to do all 3 clips from each person at once. After it was done, we made sure everythuing lined up and that we didnt need to refilm anything. As far as props, it was not much, but we had to be creative. for my glass of "wine" i used my creativity to try and make fake white wine. this included lime juice, water and sprite. while not perfect, it looked

Along with editing, having good sound quality is super important to this project. That is why I wanted the scores in this film to be perfect. To do this, I spent hours a day trying to come up with the best compisitions of music I could think of. I made sure each one matched the scenes emotional value to a "T". Using the recording studio app, Garage Band, I could record music from my guitar, key board, violin and even my sound board. This didn't come without its own set of issues, however. To record sound into the app, you need a USB port adaptater to connect to a 1/4th inch tip sleeve input. I already had both of these things, but i was concerned on how i was going to add in a violin. This is because it dosent have a tip sleeve input which is what brings sound from the instrument to the recording app. This is where I had to get creative. I dropped an airpod into the violin's F-hole (where the sound comes out) and recorded sound from my airpods into Garage Band. With t

Hello! Once I relaxed from 2 very stressfull days of filming, jordyn was finally able to edit! Firstly, we sat together and watched all of the final clips that we decided on using, and temporarily using IMovie to combine them together. From experience, Jordyn has stated that she perfers IMovie to other editing apps like Divinci Resolve 18, IMovie being much more simple. While jordyn worked on the actual editing, Aja and I gave feedback and opinions on different effects and transition ideas. Aja was very helpful in getting the exact moment that the clips needed to be cut at. Jordyn and i made sure we had all of the clips combined before she switched apps to Davinci Resolve 18. After all of this,we still had about 2 minutes and 30 seconds of time to use up. Then, Jordyn downloaded all of the clips, and sent them to my computer to edit on. While it is my laptop, we decided Jordyn would edit on it so that we dont lose it on a school computer. Before even starting to edit, we promptly made
